Fitz sat down with AIFL researcher Julija Danu to discuss the evolution of his career and how he became the first forensic linguist to have been employed by the FBI.
Via AIFL…
“My journey of slowly morphing into the field of linguistics or forensic linguistics started from being a police officer, FBI agent, and then criminal profiler or behavioralist. But I didn’t even use the term ‘forensic linguistics’ when my trial by fire started in this field in 1995, in the Unabom case. It was an interesting transition.
“I was already an 18-year veteran of law enforcement and investigations, but I was a brand-new profiler with 12 weeks of a very specific FBI Academy training. And then I’m asked to go out to this case that’s called Unabom, which has been going on for 17 years. I said yes, so I went to San Francisco for 30 days to help out with profiling concepts. ”
“Those 30 days turned into a year and a half. I found myself working a case in which traditional investigative and even profiling skills had been put forth and utilized, but really, to no degree of ultimate success.”
