Book IV Updates and Corrections – Chapter 8

During the Summer of 2025, on the Cold Red Podcast I co-host with Ray Carr (of whom you will first meet and read of in this chapter), we engaged in a season long series of twelve or so episodes all concerning a late 1990s investigation in Philadelphia, PA, known as the Center City Rapist (and Murder) Case. As you’ll read/hear in Chapter 8, the rapist eventually moved to Ft. Collins, CO, where he started victimizing women there. He was subsequently arrested in CO after a joint investigation by the Ft. Collins PD and the Philadelphia PD.

In detail in Chapter 8, I list my involvement in the above case as an FBI profiler. Virtually everything in the chapter is accurate as my memory recalls and the various records indicate. However, after multiple podcast sessions with the retired Philadelphia homicide detective, Chuck Boyle, and the father of the one murder victim of this rapist, Syl Schieber, a few of the timeframes listed in the chapter are off by a year or so, a geographical location is off by ¼ mile, and the ultimate motivation for the Schieber lawsuit against the City of Philadelphia is misstated.

Obviously, I learned of the information listed here after the book went to the publisher.

So, I’d like to correct the record here, in the order as they appear in Chapter 8 of the book.

(The listed pages are from the print versions of the book.)

  •   Pg. 90 – Re this investigation, I first met in person with the Philadelphia detectives in June of 1998.
  •   Pg. 95 – Ms. Schieber lived in what is best described as Center City Philadelphia, not West Philadelphia.
  •   Pg. 97 – The community meeting at the church on Walnut St. was in Sept. of 1999.
  •   Pgs. 101-102 – The errant comment in my FBI profiler colleague’s written report was not a factor in the family initially filing their lawsuit against the City of Philadelphia, although it became a (valid) point of contention throughout the legal process.
